Linyphiidae Batueta

Batueta voluta Locket, 1982

Seletar Money Spider

Spiders of the genus Batueta are recognised by the structures of their genitalia, their small size (< 2 mm), a deeply pitted surface of the carapace. and the arrangement of setae on the tibia. Each of the male palpal patellae bears a single robust and conspicuous spine. The females appear similar to the males, but their carapace is smooth, without any dimple-like appearance.

This species name "voluta" (meaning "coiled") draws attention of the long and spiralling embolus of the male palps. In both sexes, the area around the spinnerets is marked by a black spot.

This species is the designated representative of the genus. It was first described based on specimens collected at a location known as "Seletar", now Upper Seletar Reservoir in Singapore, but has since been reported to be widespread in Southeast Asia.
