Salticidae Bristowia

Bristowia heterospinosa Reimoser, 1934

Bristowe’s Spiny-legged Jumper

This species was described in honour of W.S. Bristowe, a British industrialist who had written prolifically on the natural history of spiders and who had collected many specimens while on business trips around the world. He collected a pair of this unusual jumper from one of the islands in the Krakatau volcanic archipelago, south of Sumatra.

The spider is rare in Singapore. Its male has extraordinarily long legs I, with well-developed femora, patellae and tibiae. Tibiae I and metatarsi I are armed with long and strong spines, but it is the thick brushes of long hair on patellae and tibiae I that immediately attract attention in the field. The shiny dark carapace is pockmarked with tiny tubercles, each carrying a stiff bristle. The abdomen is marked with two dark lateral lines.
