Psechridae Fecenia

Fecenia ochracea (Doleschall, 1859)

Raccoon Pseudo-orb Weaver

This is the larger of the two Fecenia species in Singapore. The abdomen is covered by greyish hairs in the males and brownish hairs in females. The anterior dorsum is longitudinally marked with a narrow backward-pointing band. Over most of the posterior dorsum, a series of paired dark patches, each delinated by a narrow anterior white line, are arranged on the posterior dorsum. The pattern suggests a certain similarity with a raccoon tail. Ventrally, the dark-coloured venter is traversed by a pale irregular band.

Length♀ 13–16 mm; ♂ 8 mm.
HabitatSunny and shady parts of secondary forests.
BiologyThe spider habitually hides in retreats made of a large, dried, folded or crumpled leaf suspended at the centre of a vertical pseudo orb web.
Type LocalityAmbon, Maluku, Indonesia.
DistributionAustralia, Indonesia (Papua, West Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, Aceh, West Java), Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak, Johor), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands.
