Araneidae Lipocrea

Lipocrea fusiformis (Thorell, 1877)

Grass Orb Weaver

In both sexes, the elongated and pointed abdomen is orangish red with a median orange streak outlined in yellow. The long legs are armed with long spines, especially among the males.

Length♀ 6–10 mm; ♂ 4–7 mm.
HabitatGrassy areas and damp parts of wasteland.
BiologyIt spins a loosely woven orb web (meaning with large mesh). Outside the web, the spider habitually aligns itself with a blade or the inflorescence of long grasses such as the common weed "lalang" (Imperata cylindrica).
Type LocalityKendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia.
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Indonesia (South East Sulawesi), Brunei, Myanmar, Vietnam, India, Japan.
