Thomisidae Mastira

Mastira bipunctata Thorell, 1891

Two-dotted White Angel

Two pits are found halfway down the dorsum of the pale abdomen of the male. These are what inspired Thorell to call this species "bipunctata", based on a male specimen collected in Singapore. The carapace of the male is orangish brown. In contrast against this background, the yellow eye tubercles appear particularly conspicuous. The orangish brown legs I and II brown are ringed with broad black bands.

The females may vary in colour: most are pure white; some may be yellow. In addition, both white and yellow forms may each have paired, brown and irregularly shaped bands on the carapace or the abdomen. Their legs are not banded. The females may be separated from the similar-looking Ebrechtella and Henriksenia by the presence of a denser layer of short hairs on the carapace. (The carapace of Ebrechtella appears near hairless and the hairs on the Henriksenia carapace are well spaced and almost spine like.)
