Linyphiidae Microbathyphantes

Microbathyphantes palmarius (Marples, 1955)

Palm Money Spider

The male of this widespread species can be distinguished from those of other linyphiids in Singapore by its palpal structures, and its relatively long legs and uniformly dull brown colouration without any pattern.

Length♀ 2 mm; ♂ 2 mm
Type LocalitySamoa
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka, Samoa.
HabitatThe species has been recorded from a variety of habitats, including low foliage, coral rubble on beaches, and most often, in leaf litter. The first specimens were collected under the husks of fallen coconuts. This may explain the origin of the species name "palmarius", meaning "of the palm". In Singapore, it is found on the ground in back mangrove.
