Linyphiidae Nasoona

Nasoona crucifera (Thorell, 1895)

Crucifix Nasoona

Although Thorell named this species "crucifera" in reference to the pale cross on the female dorsum, this feature is indistinct and not diagnostic. Instead, the N. crucifera female may be recognised by its epigyne that, in side-view, looks like the curved beak of a parrot. Like N. chrysanthusi. N. crucifera has six anterior teeth on each chelicera. This is a feature that separates the species from some of the superficially Nasoona-like genera of the Theridiidae.

The pattern of the female dorsum may vary. Some individuals may be completely black, while others may appear superficially similar to N. chrysanthusi, with two pairs of irregular dark dorsal patches on an olive-shaped brown abdomen.

The male is brownish black with an elevated mound just behind the eyes bearing a cluster of bent bristle, including a prominent forward-directed spine with a hooked tip and similarly bent bristles, like the comb of a rooster.
