Salticidae Parabathippus

Parabathippus shelfordi (Peckham & Peckham, 1902)

Common Divergent Jaw Jumper

This is the most common species of Parabathippus in Singapore. It is provisionally placed under P. shelfordi described from Sarawak. Unlike P. shelfordi specimens from Borneo, the Singapore male does not have patches of white hairs under the median and lateral eyes, or a streak of white hairs between the AME. DNA analysis should be able to verify if the Singapore species is distinct, or just a variant of P. shelfordi.

While the male has a metallic purple abdomen, the female has a golden abdomen with converging lines anteriorly and two to three pairs of black spots posteriorly.

Length♀ 7–8 mm; ♂ 7–8 mm
DistributionSingapore, Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak), Brunei.
HabitatVegetation in primary and secondary forests.
BiologyThe mothers are often seen guarding their egg clutches, each usually with 20–30 eggs fastened with a few strands of silk, on the underside of leaves.
