Pisauridae Perenethis

Perenethis venusta L. Koch, 1878

Broad-banded Grass Spider

In side view, spiders of the genus Perenethis can be readily distinguished from other pisaurids by a characteristically low carapace with the four median eyes sitting on an extended and gradually sloping clypeus. This means the median ocular quadrangle is immediately discernible in dorsal view. (In other pisaurids, the clypeus slope is steep, and the four median eyes are more visible from the front, rather than from above.) Unlike Polyboea. the AME of Perenethis are slightly larger than the ALE by a ratio of 3:2.

In both sexes, P. venusta is easily recognised by a broad, chocolate-coloured median band running the length of the spider. The band is delineated on each side by a narrow line made of white setae.

Type LocalityQueensland, Australia
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, India, Japan, Australia.
