Kaleidoscope Running Crab Spider
The male and female of this philodromid differ from the two species featured in previous pages by having an anteriorly truncated cephalic region, with the anterior row of eyes on a flat "face". and a body covered by a thick coat of short hairs of different colours, ranging from white, yellow, orange to dark brown. Clusters of long curved hairs extend from the sides of the posterior abdomen and especially from the outer edge of femora III & IV.

Habitat | Foliage and tree trunks on overgrown parkland and protected forest. |
Biology | The female constructs a white, almost flat, egg sac on the upper surface of a leaf. The egg sac is guarded by the mother in a characteristic pose with all legs outstretched. The egg sac is a durable structure and remains affixed to the leaf long after the spiderlings and their mother have dispersed. |
