Salticidae Phintelloides

"Phintelloides" versicolor (C. L. Koch, 1846)

Black-banded Yellow Jumper

The male shows some semblance of the body pattern of a typical Phintelloides, including a median longitudinal band over the abdomen, a white "moustache" of white setae on the clypeus, a diamond-shaped white patch behind the PME, and a pair of white belts around the carapace. However, there is a patch of white setae (instead of a band as in most Phintelloides) behind the anterior eye row. The male palp is superficially similar to those of the typical Phintelloides.

The female has a pair of brown rings on the posterior half of the carapace. The predominantly whitish abdomen is marked by irregular light and dark brown wavy bands and patches.

Although this species is listed as a member of the genus Phintelloides in the World Spider Catalog. its inclusion in the genus is problematic. This is borne out partly by DNA analysis, and partly by the absence of Phintelloides-type black patches on the female carapace, and the male and female genitalia that differ from those of typical Phintelloides.
