Tangerine Bigeye Cobweb Spider
Spiders of the genus Stemmops are found mainly in the Americas, though several species occur in Asia. They are similar to Coscinida. sharing characters such as having an ovate abdomen and large eyes on an elevated tubercle (often surrounded by black pigmentation). The only difference between the two genera is the presence (Stemmops) or absence (Coscinida) of a pair of minute ventral setae at the posterior end of the abdomen. In S. nigrabdomenus and several other Stemmops species found outside Singapore, there is a weakly sclerotized ring on the spinnerets that is similar (though less obvious) to those seen in Phoroncidia.
Although the name "nigrabdomenus" means "black abdomen", the abdomen of some individuals is pale brown. The posterior part of the abdomen is typically marked with a short and transverse white streak, a pattern seen also in several other species of Stemmops.
