Trachelidae Utivarachna

Utivarachna phyllicola Deeleman-Reinhold, 2001

Banded Bull-headed Hunter

This species may be readily distinguished from the Utivarachna sp. featured in the previous page by its smaller size and its paler colouration. The carapace is brownish, with the thoracic region marked by a dark, slightly curved V pattern (in females) or isolated dark patterns near the margins (in males). In both sexes, the abdomen is lightly coloured and traversed by dark bands and patches. The legs are brownish yellow with darker femora I. The carapace and abdomen of juveniles are almost equally light in colour with minimal dark markings.

This species also differs from the other Singapore Utivarachna species by having a rather short and less exposed pedicel. The male has a pair of balloon-like palps clearly visible with the naked eye.
