Araneidae Cyclosa

Cyclosa bifida (Doleschall, 1859)

Long-bellied Debris Spider

The female of this common spider is characterised by a long abdomen with a rounded end, often curling upwards. Its dorsum is usually black, but a brown morph also exists in Singapore. It is decorated with silvery or orangish marks, or both.

The abdomen of the males is shorter than that of the female and is marked with patches of silver in a V or X formation, or double bracketed pattern, similar to the female picture lower right.

Length♀ 4–7 mm; ♂ 3–4 mm.
HabitatPrimary and secondary forests.
BiologyThe egg sac is orange or yellowish in colour and woolly in appearance.
Type LocalityAmbon, Maluku, Indonesia.
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak), Indonesia (Maluku), Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, China.
