Araneidae Cyclosa

Cyclosa mulmeinensis (Thorell, 1887)

Two-horned Debris Spider

The female may be recognised by its globose abdomen with a pair of conical protuberances on the dorsum. The protuberances may be partially or entirely black. While sub-adult males may have the variegated colouration as in the females, the abdomen becomes predominantly dark brown upon maturity.

Length3–5 mm; 3 mm.
HabitatOpen areas, often associated with an aquatic environment such as beaches, lakes, reservoirs, and mangroves.
BiologyThe web of mature females measures 5–6 cm in diameter. Egg sacs are placed in a single row like a string of beads. along a radial line which passes through a free sector at the upper part of the web. As many as seven egg sacs may be found in a string. The spider sits at the hub with legs retracted, simulating the last bead of the chain. Webs without egg sacs do not have a free sector. In this case, the spider places pellets of debris along a vertical line above and below the hub on which it sits, thereby presenting itself as another pellet in the same chain.
Type LocalityMawlamyine, Myanmar.
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Malaysia (Johor), Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, China, India, Japan.
