Theraphosidae Phlogiellus

Phlogiellus sp. "Larger Singapore"

Larger Singapore Brown Tarantula

This species differs from the more common Phlogiellus sp. A not only by its larger size, but also by details of its mouthparts and its female copulatory organs. It is however difficult to discern any structural differences in the male palps of the two species. In both sexes, the legs bear relatively long and curved sensory hairs extending from their legs, especially laterally from their tibiae and and dorsally from their femora.

The colour ranges from a light brown to a dark chocolate. The darker individuals may look similar to immature specimens of Selenocosmia. but adult specimens are never as large as adult Selenocosmia, which are almost black with more robust legs. This species can also be separated from from the generic diagnostic characters summarised in the previous page.
