Salticidae Rhene

Rhene sp. "Domino Flat-headed"

Domino Flat-headed Jumper

The male shows a striking pattern reminding one of a domino: against a black background are three patches of white scales on the carapace, and a large patch spread over almost the entire dorsum.

The suspected female of this species (found in the same locality as the male) does not show the wavy abdominal pattern shared by some other Rhene species. Instead, a pair of lines of golden scales run on both sides of the female carapace and dorsum. Another pair of lines of golden setae run on the lower sides on the abdomen. Unlike other Rhene in Singapore, the female is less densely covered with hairs and the rugose (corrugated) texture of the carapace characteristic of the genus is discernible with the naked eye.
