Thomisidae Runcinia

Runcinia acuminata (Thorell, 1881)

Long-pointed Runcinia

Like all Runcinia, a white ridge separating the anterior and posterior eyes extends across the front end of the cephalothorax. Unlike the Runcinia sp. featured on the previous page, a pair of road parallel brownish bands on the sides of the carapace, sandwiching a pale median zone. The name "acuminata" is derived from the Latin word "pointed" and refers to the tapered abdomen of the female. The degree of tapering varies, depending on the nutritional state of the spider. The colouration and long-bodied shape, particularly of the females, camouflage them effectively while resting on a on dried-out grass stems.
