Theridiidae Argyrodes

Argyrodes fissifrons O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1869

Split-faced Silver Food-Stealer

The male is recognised by having a conical projection from the clypeus leaving a recess that is distinctively deeper than other related species. In both sexes, the abdomen is shaped like a boomerang in side view, with the spinnerets pointing downwards. The posterior abdominal end is rounded in the male and bluntly conical in the female. In dorsal view, the male abdomen is slightly constricted at the one-third and second-third sections. Silvery streaks run on the lateral sides on the abdomen. In some cases, the streaks are broad and cover the dorsum as well. There is considerable variation in the species; females are mostly orangish, but some are black.
