Lycosidae Pardosa

Pardosa sumatrana (Thorell, 1890)

Sumatran Wolf Spider

P. sumatrana resembles P. pusiola. and both are often found in the same locality. Their differences are subtle. In P. sumatrana, the transverse, slightly glittering lines over the posterior half of the dorsum are more discernible, and the legs are more heavily banded. The anterior edge of the abdomen is often surrounded by a pair of black arches. The folium seen in P. pusiola, if present, is not well defined. Female P. sumatrana can grow up to 10 mm in length while the largest P. pusiola rarely exceeds 8 mm. However, such generalisations are often defeated as the body pattern can vary from population to population, the size ranges may overlap, and even the details of its genitalia are not consistent throughout the species.

Length♀ 5–10 mm; ♂ 4–6 mm
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Malaysia (Sabah), Indonesia (Sumatra, Sulawesi), Brunei, Philippines, China, India.
HabitatDamp and shady places at grassland, wasteland, plantations, and edges of lowland and highland forests.
