Tetragnathidae Tylorida

Tylorida striata (Thorell, 1877)

Streaked Golden Humpback Spider

In both sexes, the abdomen is arched and peaked at the anterior one-third, giving it a humpback look. The species name "striata" refers to the dark streaks lining the lateral sides of the abdomen.

When the spider is disturbed or threatened, the yellow or golden spots on the abdomen shrink, and the brown lines expand. but the original brilliant colouration returns after the threat has receded.

Length♀ 5 mm; ♂ 4–5 mm.
HabitatGrassy and moist areas in open environments.
BiologyMating takes place face-to-face, without the male locking the chelicerae of the female, as shown in the picture below. The spider builds a horizontal orb web with an open hub. Some webs reportedly have a free zone (a missing sector) but this has not been observed in Singapore.
Type LocalityAmbon, Maluku, Indonesia.
DistributionSingapore, Malaysia (Sarawak, Sabah), Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, China, Japan, Australia.
