Tetragnathidae Leucauge

Leucauge fastigata (Simon, 1877)

Orange-and-black Humpback Spider

This common Singapore species is easily recognised by the orange and black colour pattern in both males and females. In some individuals, silver and black markings may dominate, but diffuse yellow or orange batches will still be discernible on the body. Compared with other Leucauge, the two rows of curved and long trichobothria on its femora IV are particularly dense. The female differs from most other Leucauge by having a pear-shaped abdomen overhanging the cephalothorax and thick spiny brushes at tibiae IV. The male is recognised by its small size (less than a-third the length of the female), and the presence of strong spines projecting from the chelicerae. It has a more extensive orange belt ventrally, compared with L. sarawakensis.

HabitatShady and moist parts of secondary forests.
Type LocalityBasilan, Philippines.
