Tetragnathidae Tetragnatha

Tetragnatha mandibulata Walckenaer, 1841

Common Big-jawed Spider

This is the most common species of Tetragnatha in Singapore. The female can be recognised in the field by a large tooth on the apical margin of the chelicerae, near the base of the fang. Most individuals in both sexes are pale brown with some diffuse black markings. Some are pale orange.

Length♀ 8–13 mm; ♂ 8–12 mm.
HabitatWaterside plants at the edges of streams, ponds, and reservoirs.
BiologyThe egg sacs are fastened firmly on the underside of emergent leaves of aquatic plants.
Type LocalityGuam.
DistributionWidespread, including Singapore, Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia), Guam.
