Common Fighting Spider
The body and legs have characteristic blueish green iridescent scales, with those on the dorsum typically arranged in two backward-arching rows. As in the unnamed Thiania species on the previous page, the male palps are covered with black hairs. However, in T. bhamoensis, the clypeus of the male is more densely covered with long white hairs.
Length | ♀ 6–7 mm; ♂ 5–6 mm |
Type Locality | Bhamo, Kachin, Myanmar |
Distribution | Widespread, including Singapore, Malaysia (Penang, Sarawak), Indonesia (Sumatra, Bali), Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, China, India. |
Habitat | Foliage in gardens, roadside hedges, and understorey within disturbed forests. |
Biology | This species is not a free-ranging hunter, but tends to remain in wait near or in the nest for potential prey to stray within leaping distance. Males threaten each other by raising the body, flexing the abdomen, spreading and jerking legs I, and may "fight" by grappling with and pushing each other. Females also fight each other, but the combat does not show the same degree of vigour as in the male-to-male fray. As in T. latefasciata. the spider builds a nest by binding two leaves together with strong rivets of silk, perpendicular to the leaf surfaces. |
