Sparassidae Heteropoda

Heteropoda venatoria (Linnaeus, 1767)

Domestic Huntsman Spider

A two-element combination helps us to recognise this species instantly: its occurrence in or around houses, and the presence of a white band across its clypeus in both males and females. The male has a pair of dark brown patches on the carapace. This is a characteristic shared by the males of many Heteropoda species, but the male of H. venatoria has a distinct and easily recognisable palp structure.

Length♀ 23–30 mm; ♂ 20–30 mm.
HabitatInside houses, occasionally on tree trunks in gardens or secondary forests.
BiologyNocturnal, cockroach eater.
Type Locality"Tropical America".
DistributionWidespread, including Malaysia, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, French Polynesia, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Chile, China, Congo, Antigua and Barbuda, Gabon, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos.
